Description of symptoms: Vehicle displays moderate to violent shaking or wobbling (shimmy) in front end and steering wheel. Often these symptoms occur after suspension lift or other modifications have been installed. Often they occur with increased speed or after hitting a bump on the highway.
Causes: Loose or worn suspension and steering components may cause or contribute to Death Wobble. Components such as tie rods, steering stabilizer, wheel bearings, track bar, ball joints, and suspension bushings can cause it. The most probably cause is suspension alignment; in particular, the alignment angle called caster. Caster may be affected by a loose or worn component.
Fixes: All suspect suspension or steering components should be replaced. The vehicle should be aligned by a professional alignment shop. You should make sure the shop knows you are having issues in the area of caster so they will be sure to align your vehicle to the proper angles. Contact the manufacturer of any aftermarket parts you have installed to get their recommended alignment specifications.
Special modification note: Lifting a coil spring Jeep naturally changes caster in the axles. This change can be reduced by the addition of longer or adjustable front lower (and upper in some cases) control arms and/or relocation brackets. Longer control arms are recommended for any lift exceeding 2 inches or where caster must be corrected beyond the factory adjustment allo(edited)ces.
