Back at every one. Deb and I had an exciting new years eve. We went to Outback for dinner then picked up Boris (Patrick's new pup) and baby sat for him. Brindle colored Pug/Boston Terrier mix

My New Years are really never different then any other night. I generally work new yrs eve and new yrs day, so I was in bed by 9:30-10 like usual and up atr 4 am getting ready for work. Just another day.
I don't hardly even remember the last time I celebrated new yrs. It had to be 8-10 yrs ago.
I'm hoping to finaly move my buisness plans from paper to reality this yr. I kept putting it off thinking things would get better and I would be able to afford it easier, but I come to realize that the longer I wait the harder it gets. I haven't gotten a raise in 4 yrs and the economy doesn't get better. My health benefits cost more and pay less. Everything keeps going up in price, so the long story short, I may as well sink what I have, before the gov't takes it anyway.
I have it pretty much budgeted down to only needing 24 hrs a week at my opening shop rate ,which is not much over what I charge now and less than any of the semi local shops, provided I can get in the place I want for the money that I want to spend a month, which is avg for the area and location.
You can always go bigger later, but you are always safer starting smaller. I have a large clientel as it is, so I know it will take off. It's just getting the intial money together to jump start the whole thing.
That's my New Years wish and Goal I'm setting for myself.

I truly wish you the best of luck Neal. But you know if you do start your own business and succeed, YOU DIDN'T DO THAT. ;D

You are a brave man Neil...we chose to not buy a new car because we didn't like not knowing what Congress was or wasn't doing with the "Fiscal Cliff"...but I wish you the best of luck and wich I lived closer so I could give you some business.

You know, lotsa folks are starting their own businesses simply because they can't find a job. Have you looked into the possibility of any kind of government assistance for starting your business? I know there's programs available but I don't know much about them. MS

Wonk.......Yes I know that, but then I wouldn't have existed in the first place.....
Mudskipper, I've looked into all sorts of things. Grants are almost like a lottery, and it seems it's more like who you know than what you know, when it comes to securing them.
SBA offers alot of help and guidance to securing small buisness loans and contacts to people for simply helping you become succesful.
I'm not going to require much as far as equipment and tooling go, it's going to be having the money to acctually get the shop set-up and operable legally and physically.
Most of the places around here are not up to current code, and if I am going to sink all kinds of money that way, I would rather buy than rent, but time will tell with what I find. I have my eye on a place that closed up a yr or two ago due to the death of a partner and owner. The son has it now,so I want to see if he'll rent it. If that goes good, I should be able to keep initial costs low.

That's unfortunate about the grant situation, but it isn't surprising I guess. Again, best of luck to you. Hopefully you'll still remember us little people on UJS after you make your millions. ;D MS

I'm too generous to make millions, and humble enough to never think of myself as better than anyone. I just want to be happy making a living, doing what I love, and helping others accomplish their dreams.........That fulfills mine.

I did another state grant search, came up with nothing.....but it's worth looking from time to time.
I read one time that the key to getting a grant is in the wording if not who you know, and certian offices have way better luck than others in securing one. The question would then be....How much does that cost?
