Figured I would post my mpgs up. I get about 19-20 highway, 15avg. Winter sucks for fuel for me too. Best i got was 23, all highwayay. Towing the Jeep i got about 12-14.
Just installed a new altermator this weekend and put.on a new belt. Failed a bench test instantly. Was only charging ~11v.
In other news. Transmission gets torn out again. At least it wont cost me a cent. I wouldnt think asking for a trans that shifts properly was such a tall order. When getting on the highway and it doesnt want to leave 2nd... I'm not towing anything til this is addressed.... and new rear tires. Ugh.

Dave, that is a common issue. Tell them that they have to decrease the input shaft end play down to .036 (the min spec in th manaual------the manuals are incorrect). The reaction seals are not remaining sealed inside the front clutch which gives you 3rd gear.
I found out the hard way on my own. The 3rd time I pulled everything out and measured every last bit of the internals from pump to rear clutch, which piggy backs the front clutch via sun shell. I found that the factory spec of .036- .086 for the input shaft end-play was way off from correct. I found that .046 acctually allowed the inner seal surface of the front clutch to unseat the secondary seal on the reaction shaft and it would drop out 3rd gear after getting up to temp.
It even passed the air test with it the way it was,I dropped it to .036 and never had a problem again.
You should have the 47RE, so the only difference between are transmissions is 5 gear planetaries for the 47 and 4 gear planetaries for the 46.

I should add that everyone that has these trans' rebuilt, goes thru the same thing, and usually by the third time back to the shop they figure it out.

Trans shop called. Solenoid was bad. They replaced all of the solenoids to be on the safe side. We'll see how it shifts when I stomp on it later.

Been a few days, and the trans is shifting as it should. No slipping. We'll see how long this lasts. I've got plans to put several tons of stone in the bed again.
And it seems I have popped one of my airlift springs... more for the to-do list

Just ordered new headlights. 83 shipped. The original headlights are so badly yellowed that i was having some trouble driving in the snow last night. I tried the headlight polishing over the summer, tried the wetsanding in the fall. We'll see how it turns out when the show in in 5-7 days.

where did you get them from Dave? I have the same problem with mine. I guess I should ask wether they are the stock style or an aftermarket. I want to stay with a stock style.

Wow...Those are something, Dave... Did you get the tail lights to match? I hope they work out for you, but I expect within 6-12 months at least one of them will be full of moisture. I haven't found anything for Sharon's Jetta that I (or she) like better than the stock GLI housings, and I'm willing to wet sand and buff once a year over shelling out over $400 for another set of those. No moisture inside, either. I see it even in stock style inexpensive replacement lights on the car lot.

I am not thrilled with it the clear corners either, but i wnt better visibility. Im willing to sacrifice some style points if it helps. You should see some of the other options. Wow. Tail lights are still factory. If they do fog up, oem replacements are 75 shipped. Im willing to give them a shot. Does Sharon have a Mark3? I know Ericas 94 Jetta had expensive headlights.

Pssh!! The MK3 lights are cheap, everywhere in the junkyards, and have glass lenses, so they don't have the yellowing issue. Sharon's GLI is a MK4 and has the black housing lights w/the foglights and an OEM set runs around $550. I did just find some Hellas I like for $250/set, which is very reasonably.
I'm actually wishing I would've saved the crystal clear H4 housings that were in the YJ for the truck. I'll have to pick up another set, maybe spend the cash for the Hella euro-spec beam pattern and glass lenses.
